Reza Taghipour

Multidisciplinary Visual Artist
Born 1981,  Iran

Reza Taghipour is a multidisciplinary visual artist with a Master’s degree in Visual Communication from Tehran Azad University in Iran. His passion for Traditional Persian Calligraphy developed during his teenage years and blossomed through his apprenticeship under acclaimed calligraphers in Iran. Reza has exhibited his works in several countries, including Iran, Turkey, and Australia, and has won prizes and been nominated multiple times in fine art competitions in both Iran and Australia.

Reza’s calligraphy paintings are inspired by abstract expressionist art, the vivid hues of the Tabriz style in Iranian miniature paintings, and the patterns found in nature. In 2006, while pursuing his visual communication studies at university, he noticed similarities between abstract expressionism (modern Western art) and Tabriz miniature (traditional Persian art) in their use of colour. He also observed similarities between abstract expressionism and Siah Mashq in Persian calligraphy, particularly in emotional reactions, personal expression, spontaneity, dynamics, and texture. This sparked an idea that allowed him to create vibrant artworks with Nastalig-style Siah Mashq composition.

Reza introduced a new formalism of Iranian calligraphy by combining traditional monochrome Nastalq calligraphy with abstract expressionism. In his latest works, he creates minimalist sculptures with letters, showcasing his unique artistic approach. Additionally, Reza has fused portrait paintings with calligraphy, resulting in a blend of calligraphy aesthetic qualities and portrait paintings in his artwork.
