Reza Taghipour
Multidisciplinary Visual Artist
Born 1981, Iran
Reza Taghipour is an Iranian-Australian multidisciplinary visual artist and researcher. He holds a Master of Research from the School of Humanities and Communication Arts (WSU) and a Master of Visual Communication from the Faculty of Arts and Architecture, Islamic Azad University, Tehran, Iran.
Taghipour began his artistic journey with traditional Persian calligraphy in his teenage years, refining his practice through apprenticeship with acclaimed calligraphers in Iran. In 2004, He expanded this foundation through formal study in visual communication at the undergraduate level, where, alongside his focus on design, his artistic research identified strong affinities between Abstract Expressionism and traditional Persian art forms, particularly Tabriz miniature painting in its use of colour and Siah Mashq calligraphy in its expressive formal qualities. He became especially interested in their shared emphasis on colour, emotional intensity, spontaneity, gesture, texture, and personal expression.
These connections inspired him to develop a distinctive visual language that brings together the dynamic compositions of Nastaliq-based Siah Mashq with the expressive energy of Abstract Expressionism. During his bachelor’s and master’s studies in Iran, he further explored calligraphy-based painting through forms and patterns inspired by nature.
Since migrating to Australia in 2016, Taghipour has extended his practice across a wider range of media, including minimalist letter-based sculpture, calligraphic portrait painting, short-form minimal video, and installation incorporating Persian carpet elements. His current doctoral research explores the relationship between art and visual AI.
Reza Taghipour’s portfolio includes a range of international and culturally focused poster designs, as well as live performances presented across different countries. He has exhibited his work internationally in Iran, Turkey, and Australia, and has received awards and nominations in both fine art and poster design in Iran and Australia.
